In my role as social worker for the NSW Health Department, I have been running a very successful weekly therapeutic group program for at risk teenage girls in schools called Chrysalis, for 9 years. After sharing my stories and successes with friends, they encouraged me to set up a more generic private program for all girls, with a focus on helping them navigate the rocky grounds of pre adolescence and adolescence. My program is adaptable and ever changing based on the needs of your child. I believe young people work best together and an important part of this program is to develop a network of support.
Groups are one off or we can negotiate several depending on how many topics you choose. Most groups are designed around friendship groups, which helps to connect young people together and establish trust as they move into teen years. Some groups come back each year and we review the year together and focus on the next age associated challenalways include an older girl to help with advice, mentoring and to keep the issues current and on point.
I love my work, it continues to inspire and excite me when I see girls come together in a safe, creative environment to learn, share, knowledge, experience and draw strength as a group which they carry in their hearts and into their own lives.
